It's been a while...let's have a cat post!

They're little dears but, oh, the trouble they get into. Cosmo is currently madly running the length of the apartment. Viggo is pretending to be asleep in the cat condo but he's really planning hijinks.

Getting rid of stuff is hard but I have a bag of clothes ready to donate and a pile of ten books to also go. I only need to find more books to cull. The ones I'll never read again nor refer to again. Mind, I'm keeping the ones that mean a lot to me like the British literature books I read in college for one of my favorite classes.

Here are the clothes going bye-bye:

20258415_10155557668430818_6732822890337325398_n.jpg

What I'm not even contemplating are my DVDs, they can wait for another day. Nor my CDs despite the fact that all I have to play them is an external CD drive for my laptop and a small boombox. Do people even say boombox anymore, oy, I've aged myself. I'm going to get rid of the plastic cases of the CDs I'm keeping and putting the CDs and booklets in slim sleeves. Thus creating room and possibly getting rid of my CD bookcases. Possibly. I could use them to display small tchotchkes.

I have a friend coming over tomorrow night so I really need to clean up my place. And one way is making room on the bookshelves for the piles of books on the coffee table. We need the coffee table for food and crafts.

For the time being my back room, the dining room/office, will store some of my things. Hopefully V won't want to go back there but just in case I'll clean the kitchen.

When I'm depressed these things are let go, especially the dishes. That's going to be quite the hurdle. I'll do half today and half tomorrow.

It'll feel better to have the place clean. Next up is the BEDROOM OF DOOM! There are days of laundry in there and I have a stuffed coin purse full of quarters. I can do this! WASH ALL THE CLOTHES! And maybe some of *them* can be donated.

There was a rug, a really pretty one, in the backroom but I'm getting rid of it because the cats kept bunching it up against the dining room table. Instead, at some future point, I'll get one of those oval rag rugs. Something colorful and cheerful.

Oh, and I need to do the bathroom and decide if I'm going to get rid of the rug in there. It's really hard to vacuum.

So, having friends visit is a good impetus to clean! And helps with my depression. I'm reading a book geared to those who are depressed or have physical ailments that make cleaning hard. It says to just tackle one thing at a time. If you're interested it's Unf•ck Your Habitat. So far it's okay. I like that it says just tackling one little thing like a bedside table when depressed is progress. It also emphasizes to not care what others think, you can get things done in your own time owing to whatever obstacle prevents you from doing a mega-cleaning.

PS...saw Despicable Me 3 and thought it was darling. Anything with the Minions in it is good.

Leverage fic recs?

I've finished Leverage and now I need all the fics. Anybody got recs?

I'd prefer stories with a strong element of character exploration, although I will take mostly-plotty if it's a very good plot. I'd love character-focused stories for any of the main characters or the recurrings, and I would especially love stories about Sterling, because I adore Mark Sheppard. I'm not looking for PWPs, but ship fic is welcome for any of the following: Hardison/Eliot, Hardison/Parker/Eliot, Hardison/Parker, Nate/Eliot, Nate/Sterling (please!), Nate/Damien Moreau. I'm not especially fond of Nate/Sophie but if there's a really outstanding story, I'll read it.

I also had a question about the last series under the cut )

A night's sleep helps out a lot. The dreams were angsty but I think they resolved a bunch of issues. So, am feeling less losery.

In cheery news my pal in Berlin sent me chocolate and two of them are utterly delicious summer flavors of Ritter Sport: pink grapefruit and blackberry. Yum! There are two other Ritter Sports and they're nut filled and also look delicious. It's fun getting German chocolate from someone who knows me so well. I've already written her thank you card and will send it off later on today.

Today it's more job hunting while also burning the prayer candles hoping I get a kickass job. I know, I'm superstitious...and not very religious. But it worked several times before. Please let it work this time.

In a couple of weeks my mom and I are off to see the White Sox on a giveaway day. Hopefully we can get the retro jerseys! We're going to leave ultra early.

It sucks not having a car because it would make finding a job easier, I'd have more options. And I could visit my parents more easily. But I don't miss the taxes nor the parking tickets.

If I start feeling low today, which is most likely, I better be more proactive and do something like knit or color. Or...relearn some ukulele chords. I've let that go lax for so long that I might as well take the beginner course again. Happily, though, I have all the handouts and a beginner book to go to instead of shelling out quite a few bucks for a class.

My neighbor is moving to the South and gave me a bunch of framed prints and I have no idea where to hang them. I might do as some suggested and hang them close to the floor. I also have three prints that need framing so when I get a job those will go up high on the walls. Two of the prints are illustrations by Chad Sell. They're of contestants from RuPaul's Drag Race and they're gorgeous.

26. A song that makes you want to fall in love A political song

I don't like many of these last prompts, so I'm just going to change them as I see fit.

One great thing about Billy Bragg's early work is that he got his political message across by telling stories. Later, his political songs got more abstract and preachy, and I don't like the later ones as much. (The same thing happened to Paul Weller, sadly.) This isn't one of Bragg's best known songs, but it's always meant a lot to me. The myth that if you work hard at your education you'll get a good job has been proven wrong in my own life over and over again.

I finally got around to watching the final season of Person of Interest.

A few thoughts under the cut )

After POI I was in the mood for something a bit lighter, so I've been watching Leverage and enjoying it quite a lot. Sometimes the caper plots wear a bit thin (and I love capers and heists), but I adore the characters and the team dynamics. I even, to my surprise, really like the Hardison/Parker relationship, which seems to be growing organically rather than being forced on us, and which anyway isn't at all like a typical male/female screen romance. In contrast I deeply don't like Sophie/Nate, which is much more conventional and which does feel forced.

I must, however, note with disapproval that I'm now halfway through S4 and there hasn't been a single queer character. Really, show? Really, show that is mostly quite progressive about everything else? Really?

25. A song by an artist no longer living

I intended not to repeat an artist on this meme, but the answer to this question has to be Bowie, doesn't it?

A song from Ziggy Stardust, because when I was about 14 I wanted to be Ziggy Stardust (this was the early 80s, the era of "Let's Dance," but it was the earlier album that really moved me). I wore weird makeup and weird jewelry and got ferociously bullied for it; the fact that it was primarily Ziggy Stardust* and not wanting to a "a pretty girl" that inspired me to try makeup should perhaps have been a clue. Anyway, this song and this album were a big part of my covertly queer youth.

*Full disclosure: and Duran Duran, who were also boys in makeup. I loved my poster of them more than I ever loved their music, I think.

Howdy! I'm running out of savings and though I'm going on interviews (I've got a big one on Monday) I'm still unsure how I'm going to get by next month. If you can spare a little money it will be greatly appreciated. And if you PM me via Dreamwidth/LJ with your address I'll send you a hand drawn thank you card.

Here's the link to my GoFundMe account: Donate here.

In other news I'm jogging further. Yay! It'll be a while, though, before I can do a 5k run. My goal is to be able to do that by October. Maybe if I sign up for a race that will give me the oomph to be ready by then? (bites fingers)

Back in May I turned 50 and got an AARP membership. Dudes and dudettes, I'm old! I can get discounts with my AARP card! I actually read the magazines they produce! Send help stat!

For the 4th of July I went on a family reunion to a rural part of PA where cellphone service was spotty at best. It actually was nice not to be tethered to technology. We hung out at my cousin's, saw fireworks up close in a farm field, had an anniversary lunch for my Aunt and Uncle, and talked a lot! There even was a community ham dinner that benefited the volunteer fire department. It was family style and we ate at long tables alongside strangers who were very nice. The pie? OMG! I had the strawberry rhubarb and it was homemade.

Then I was off to NJ to visit another cousin and my cousin-in-law, his wife. I got to go to NYC and eat at Junior's and follow it up with a Broadway show, Waitress. Which was good, btw. It's based on a movie of the same name and though I had seen that movie I had forgotten so much! The music was great and the actors did a fabulous job.

The next day I watched Wimbledon for a bit and then we went off to the zoo. I always feel bad about the animals in the zoo but didn't want to tell my companion that. We just couldn't think of what else to do. Oh! And we had excellent Indian buffet before the zoo.

On Friday I hung out a bit with my cousin and his wife's darling dog, a Papillon, and then headed home. The cousin and his wife were so kind to pay for me to visit them, I told the wife I will do some art for her as a thank you. I might do a drawing or painting of their dog, perky ears and all!

Now I've been studying up on grammar, searching for a job, and jogging...and reading the AARP Bulletin. Heh. Today I'm off to see my doctor and get my scrips filled and go pick them up. Exciting, I know!

PS...my cats were so well taken care of by Miss [personal profile] talitha78, they were happy and relaxed when I came home.

24. A song by a band you wish were still together

I can't really imagine the Smiths still together in 2017--few bands can last that long without becoming a sad parody of themselves, and the Smiths' last album was already showing all the signs of a group past its best. Then again, it's nice to fantasize about them lasting just a little longer, releasing one or two more good albums, putting off the moment when Morrissey, away from Johnny Marr's counterbalancing force, disappeared up his own ego and re-emerged as an Islamophobic Brexiter.

I'm giving two links again on this post, the first because it's a song I really love, and the second not only because of the songs, but because of the video(s), directed by groundbreaking queer film-maker Derek Jarman.

23. A song you think everybody should listen to A song by a band who probably should have broken up after their first album

I'm not confident enough in my musical taste to recommend something to everybody; I don't think my taste in music is bad, but it's very limited. So I've created a question I like better, inspired by question 24 ("a song by a band you wish were still together").

I loved the first Mumford and Sons album. I adored the banjos and the folk-rock fusion, and the lyrics struggled with religion and ethics and doubt and temptation in a way I found interesting. Then came the second album, and it was not good. The music was more conventional, and worse, the lyrics had become preachy and all the doubting humanity seemed to have vanished in favor of doctrinaire Christian assertions. So here's a song from the first album. I like it because it's very human, often emotionally ugly, and because it can be very easily be read as queer, though I'm not sure it was intended to.

Mumford and Sons, "White Blank Page"
